AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY

Javier Vinuela is a Chilean-American artist working across sculpture, printmedia, performance, & social practice.  His work focuses on the forces that organize collective life, moving through contradiction and infrapolitics to examine how social relations are structured and sustained. Drawing from activism, subculture, and poetry, his practice treats logistics of political economy as a site of inquiry to reveal how infrastructures shape movement and possibility.

His work has been exhibited at the Musuem of Contemporary Art Chicago, National Museum of Mexican Art Chicago Humanities Festival, Chicago Art Department, Co-Prosperity Sphere,  Pilsen Arts & Community House, and Compound Yellow among others. He’s a recipient of the Arrowmont Windgate Fellowship,  the Dean’s List Award, and a cohort member of the Undergraduate Scholars Program at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Christian Joshua Varela Solis is a Mexican-American interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores the consequences of colonization in contemporary Latin American culture, the sensitivity of their environment, and the dynamics of personal connection. Through a visual exploration of aesthetics, cultural survival, and inheritance, their work examines how history continues to shape identity and material culture. Currently completing their BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a recipient of a Presidential Merit Scholarship and Renee petit Fine Arts Scholarship. Their work has been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, National Museum of Mexican Art for Chicago’s Humanities Festival, Chicago Art Department,  Pilsen Arts & Community house, Chicago Art Department, SAIC Galleries, Compound Yellow, and Riverside Arts Center.
